MCLEAN Family History
This notable surname, with spellings of MacLean, Maclean, MacLaine, McLean, Mccleane, McLane, and others, is widely recorded in Scotland and Ireland. It is a developed form of the Old Gaelic name "Mac gille Eoin", which translates as "the son of the devotee of (St) John", from "Mac", meaning son of, and "gille", literally translating as servant or follower", but used here in the transferred sense of devotee, and the saint's name "Eoin or Ian", the classic Gaelic form of John. John derives ultimately from the Hebrew Yochanan, meaing "Jehovah has favoured me (with a son)".Select Audience

Hi. My branch of McLean family left Coleraine in the North of Ireland in the 50s and 60s, mostly as a result of the early Troubles and sectarian violence. They headed to Manchester in the UK, as they already had family there.

We are Macleans and McPhees. My Great Father was a Maclean out of Prince Edward Island. Her mom married a Maclean who was already married when she found out she left him and gave his son HER maiden name McPhee.
We traced the Maclean line to a Dr Neil Maclean who was born in Scotland but immigrated to the colonies. It took us till a couple of days to get that far so we are going back more.?

My GGF Robert McLean was born in Tipperary around 1815. He married Ann Brady and emigrated to Canada where he died in 1877. I have been unable to uncover any more of his history. There do not seem to be many (any) McLeans around Tipperary. I would be grateful to anyone able to add more to his family or story. Thanks

(Part 1 of 3) The McLean name can be found in Scotland, but its origin according to DNA is from the north-west coast of the Emerald Island. The McLean story [dominated by DNA tribal marker R1b-L513, Subgroup A1] can trace their origins to the Finn Valley in Donegal, Ireland from 50 BCE. Perhaps the journey begins with the Clanna Dedad; Deda, son of Sen or Deda Mac Sin. The McLean surname origin is from a Northern Ui Neill [R1b-L513] tribe. The Cenรฉl Eoghan and the tribes of Donegal conquered much of Ulster (Derry and Tyrone).

(Part 2 of 3) Cenรฉl Eoghan will expand across northern Ireland with their cousins Cenรฉl Conaill and the Northern Ui Neill between 500-800 BCE. The clans of Finn Valley have the same DNA as people from Gwynedd in Brittany. But how could this be? Recent discoveries from DNA testing are unlocking the migration patterns of Celtic tribes as late as 800 CE to 1200 CE. The McLean story begins in pre-history Ireland then moves to Scotland as they form part of the Dalriada. Descendants of their tribe will then travel to Brittany, France during the Dark Ages.

(Part 3 of 3) Discover their newly found untold story and how forgotten texts bring their story back to life. From the ebook, โThe Tribe Withinโ learn how DNA unfolds this amazing tale and if you look in the right places, how history narrates this evidence. There is another written account of their story, but it is camouflaged in smoke and myth โ it will become the tales of King Arthur.
