MCELROY Family History
Recorded in many spelling forms including MacIlroy, MacElroy, McIlroy, McElroy, McGilroy, McAlroy and others, this is both a Scottish and Irish surname. It is an anglicized spelling form of the Gaelic "Mac Giolla Ruaidh", composed of the elements "Mac", meaning son of, "giolla", the youth, and "ruaidh", red haired; hence, "The son of the red haired youth". The sept originated in County Fermanagh, Ireland, where the placename Ballymackilroy is found: Their territory was on the east side of Lough Erne.Select Audience

James Ian McElroy
James Ian McElroy, son of James Neil, grandson of Neil Allan, Great Grandson of Clarence Homer McElroy. Lots of James and Johns further down the line. I've always been told our family came from Scotland with ties to Clan Grant.
Julie McElroy
Hello. My name is Julie McElroy. Daughter of Alexander McElroy. Grandaughter of Lawrence McElroy from Armagh (have relatives in Donegal as well). I live in America. Our family resides in the Philadelphia region. I now live in New Hampshire. My DNA from "23 & me" has me 99.9% Irish, English, Scottish and puts the majority of my DNA from County Mayo.?
Mac McKleroy
I can trace my family tree to John MacKleroy/McKleroy born in the US in Baltimore MD in 1670. He married Francis Durham and was a land owner in the Raleigh/Durham area moving into Georgia.
He was probably the son of Patrick or Archibald who sailed from Sligo, Ireland to Baltimore. I haven't found the link in Ireland or Scotland.
Does this sound familiar to anyone?
Elizabeth McElroy
My father's family is from MS. I think I have traced back to a James McElroy in SC born 1776 on ancestry. I am stuck going further at a John Mesler McElroy (according to ancestry he had 3 different wives but all the same children? And "my" James seems to be a half to the other children) - but this leads to John James McElroy and Martha Moore in PA, but nothing before - does this line sound familiar? I would love to know more.
Richard McLeroy
Does sound familiar. But as I understand it, Patrick & his father didn't arrive from Ireland until 1674.
