KEENAN Family History
Recorded as O'Keenan and more usually Keenan, this is an Irish surname. Found mainly in the Ulster and northern counties of Fermanagh and Monaghan, it originates from the ancient pre 10th century Gaelic name O' Cianain meaning "The descendant of the faithful one" or similar. It may not have been entirely coincidence that the clan was famous through out the Medieval Period for producing both high ranking members of the church, and early historians, in several cases the same thing. The first recorded scribe was Adam O' Caianain, who was also the canon of Lisgool in Fermanagh. He is mentioned in the annals known as the "Four Masters" as being the historian to the famous Maguires of County Fermanagh...Select Audience

Looking for information about a John Keenan 1789-1854 perhaps from County Clare, emigrated to Canada and dies 1/7/1854 in Quebec. Trying to discover where in Clare he was from. Married Mary Whineham. Had 5 children. She eventually made her way to Buffalo, NY after his death in Quebec.

My great great grandfather Patrick Keenan came to Melbourne, Australia around the 1850s, and lived in Geelong where he was part of the Police Force. He married Ann Brougham, although I l'm not sure when.
Im interested to know exactly when they came to Australia and which part of Ireland he is from but am having trouble finding information ????

Hello! My grandfather, Patrick Keenan, was born in Killybegs, Donegal and left home as a teenager to work in Scotland, later emigrating to the US in his early 20's, around the time that WWI was starting. We were told that he didn't want to fight for the British so off he went. He landed in Boston, but settled in Newark NJ. He later married another Irish immigrant, Winifred Crane, and they had three children of which my father, John J. Keenan was the oldest. Since he 'ran away' from home at a young age, we never learned much about my Keenan family tree, and I want to learn more!

Mary Keenan Mackowiak
In my previous post about Peter Keenan from Roscommon, I mistakenly said he arrived in the U.S. in 1951. I meant 1851. :)

Mary Keenan Mackowiak
My second great grandfather was Peter Keenan, he came to the U.S. in 1951 from Roscommon, Ireland, possibly along with his two brothers. He settled in McHenry County, Illinois, USA, working as a farmer. He married Mary (possibly McGlone) also from Ireland, and they had two children. He fought for the Union in the Civil War and was injured at the battle of Spanish Fork, and returned home to IL in 1865. In 1868 his wife died, and he remarried a widow, Catherine Nolan (originally from County Fermanagh, Ireland). I know nothing of Peter's life in Ireland, and would love to know more, if anyone might have any information or tips. Thanks!

I am a descendant of Patrick Keenan who married Ann/Anna Nolan/Nowlan. They had at least 3 children who moved to California in the United States: Bridget Keenan (born 1839) who married Patrick Clifford, Peter Keenan (born 1843 or 45 +/-) who married Margaret Hartnett, and Hugh Keenan (born 1849) who never married. I am trying to find what area of Fermanagh the family was from.

My grandfather was John Patrick Keenan. He was a skilled carpenter and came from a family in NE Victoria at a place named Staghorn Flat. near Wodonga and Albury. Grandpa was an astue man who suffered during and after WW1. Though of an honest disposition, his WW1 experiences led to him being charged with Desertion, though I believe he was in British Casualty Clearing Station prior to a British Red Cross Hospital and then the Rouen rehabilitation hospital in France after suffering the affects of a gas attack. His post WW1 life indicates an industrious man with responsible community values Any links back to a credible path through history of his original family will be greatly appreciated.
