KEARNS Family History
Recorded in the spellings of Kearn, Kern, Kerne,Kerner, Kernes, and Kearns, this is a surname of multiple national origins. Confusingly it can be German, or English-Cornish, and sometimes Irish. Equally it has multiple meanings and derivations. If German and hence Anglo-Saxon (English) it probably derives from the pre 7th century word "gern" meaning desire, and usually found in the early personal names "Gernwin and Kernwin". However the surname can also be locational from the town of Kern in Germany. If Irish and possibly Cornish, the derivation is from the pre 10th century Gaelic personal name "Ceirin" which translates as "The little black one"...Select Audience

I am 3rd and 4th generation Australian, depending on family line my Kearns ancestors Hugh Kearns and Ellen Kearns(Cosgrave) were from Dunganstown, Wicklow and came to Australia in 1869 on the Great Britain and landed in Melbourne before they then took a boat around the bay on the Aldinga to Adelaide where they settled with their 4 kids. One of his sons Henry married Wilhemina (Fischer) and relocated to Melbourne with their 3 kids in 1886, sadly Wilhemina took ill and died in Carlton that same year. I am descended from Henry James Kearns who was their eldest son and my Great Grandfather.

My 4 x great-grandmother was Mary Curran but sometimes written as Kearn(s). She was born in Ireland about 1777 and tried in Dublin for highway robbery with 2 other girls (all dressed as men), then transported to Sydney NSW where she co-habited with Thomas Storer, another convict, and had several children to him. I believe she had 2 sisters, Bridget and Frances (Fanny). She died in Sydney in 1821.
