HARGROVE Family HistoryRecorded as Hargrave, Haregrave, Hargreave, Hargrove, Hargraves, Hargreaves, and possibly others, this is an English Surname. It is locational from any of the various places in Cheshire, Northamptonshire, and Suffolk called Hargrave or Hargreave, and recorded in the famous Domesday Book of 1086. The placenames are derived from the Olde English pre 7th century "hara" meaning a hare, although possibly a personal name, and the suffix "grafe", meaning a thicket or wood. Locational surnames were developed when former inhabitants of a place moved to another area, usually to seek work, and were best identified by the name of their birthplace.

Looking for mother’s family from Oklahoma my grandfather was James, youngest of about a dozen children of Mont Hargrove. I know Mont lived in Virginia, Tennessee and Oklahoma.
