GILLIGAN Family History
MacGilligan, or more usually in Ireland, Gilligan or Galligan, derives from the Old Gaelic "MacGiollagain". The translation is almost certainly "the son of the Chiefs attendant", literally a "page", one who was training for Knighthood. "Giolla" implies one who was a devotee or close follower, and was often used as a prefix to a saints name, although not in this case. Here the diminutive "gain" emphasises the "page" to create "the future knight". Curiously, although the name has clear Scottish origins, it is not found in this spelling in the early records of the country. The clan has always been prominent in County Derry where their territory was known as "MacGilligans strand, whilst the village of Tamlaght Ard was originally known as Ard MacGilligan...Select Audience

Brian Menzies
Hi there. My gran, born in the Gorbals/Hutchesontown (1903), Glasgow, was Ellen Gilligan. Her grandad, John Gilligan was from Ireland, and married Mary Ann Dixon (from Dublin I think). Their daughter, Margaret Gilligan (my great grannie) was born in 1874 in Glasgow. I would be really grateful for suggestions on the best way of finding out more about the Gilligan's in Ireland.
Audrey Gilligan
Hello : My name is Audrey Gilligan and I am the Widow of Rolyn Gilligan. I am doing research on the Gilligan family and have gotten back into the seventeen hundreds. Have found a large group of Williams in Canada. Have been trying to trace three of them ; aWilliam Wallace Gilligan, a William Henry and a just plain William. have traced William H to Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin and the William to Rhinelander, Wi, William Wallace seems to have stayed in Canada. Also a James Gilligan in New York. My husbands Great Grandfather was John Caravagh Gilligan and he lived in Spruce township, Oconto County, Wi. His father seems to have been John T Gilligan. that is as far as I have gotten. I am working through Ancester.com.
