This ancient surname is of German and French pre 7th century origins. It derives from either of the popular personal names Gerard or Gerald. "Gerard" comprises the elements "gari" meaning a spear, and "hard" - brave, whilst "Gerald" has the same prefix of "gari", but the suffix is from "wald", meaning to rule. This type of compound name with its echoes of tough living and yet compliance with authority, is very typical of the period in history known as "The dark ages" Later after the 11th century there was a revival in Christian belief, and "names" often became biblical, through association with the crusades...More GARRETT family history

CIARAN COLGAN
My Garrett family came from Johnstown Co Kilkenny. Their parents were school teachers of the town.. There were ten siblings. Many of them immigrated to Melbourne Australia. In fact they became a bridgehead for further families to immigrate to Australia. There are two well established families there now the Piggott's and Beasley's. Their dad was James Garrett 1844 /1916. I have no information on James family where in Kilkenney was his family base who were his parents did he have any siblings and so on. There is a suggestion his family found their way to Minnesota for him later to return to Ireland
