FOLEY Family History

Ó Foghladha, litriú nua Ó Foghlú- anglicised as Foley, O'Foley. The root word is personal name Foghlaidh, which Woulfe writes in 'Sloinnte Gaedheal is Gall' (1923) means 'plunderer', although this is conjectural.

Mac Searraigh- anglicised McSharry, Sharry, Sherry and by mis-translation as Foley, from searrach, 'a foal'.

The surname Ó Foghladha was originally of Co Waterford, but has spread through Munster and parts of Leinster. A 12th century Bishop of Cashel in Co Tipperary was Máel Íosa Ó Foghladha.

Mac Searraigh was a surname of counties Leitrim, Cavan and Sligo, and later of Donegal and Armagh.

Foley is also the name of an important family of Worcestershire; and although it is possible English officials or settlers of this name arrived in Ireland during the 17th century, the numerous Irish Foleys would be, by far, the majority. MacLysaght comments on this, and on the tendency to incorrectly ascribe to Irish Foleys the arms of the English family ('Irish Families', 1985).

If we look at the 1659 'Census', undertaken by Sir William Petty, we find Foley as a 'Principal Irish Name' in the following counties:

Waterford
Decies Barony, Fowlow &c 70 families; Cosmore & Cosbride, O Fowlow, 10; Glanahiry, Fowlow, 12; Upperthird, Fowlow, 12; Middlethird, Fowlow, 6; Galtire, Fowlow, 4.

Cork
City & Liberties, Fowlow, 11; Barrymore, O Fowlowe, 38.

Kerry
Trughanacht, O Fowlue, 12; Maquinihy, O Fowlue, 8.

Wexford
Bantrie, Fouly, 6, and Fuoly, 4; Scarwelsh, O Fowly, 9.

No Foleys found in the counties cited for MacSharry in the 1659 Census, in fact no MacSharrys either, only O Sharry appears in Co Armagh.

The highest numbers of Foley in the 1850s Griffith's 'Primary Valuation' of Irish households were in counties Cork (581), Kerry (444), Waterford (330), Wexford (173), Tipperary (91) and Sligo (85). Total number of Foley households was 2407, with additional 30 Fowley households.

The Registrar General's 'Special Report on Surnames..' (1894) based on the births' distribution figures in 1890, found most Foleys in counties Kerry, Cork, Waterford and Dublin.

Two Famous Foleys

John Henry Foley (1818-1874) sculptor born in Dublin. His statue of Daniel O'Connell towers over the beginning of O'Connell Street, Dublin.

Linda Foley is an American journalist, and President of the Newspaper Guild from 1995 to 2008. She caused controversy by accusing the U.S. military of being responsible for the actual targeting of journalists in Iraq.

My father was Cornelius Francis Foley born in America in 1930 died 2006. His father was John Foley died in 1981. My great grandfather was a Cornelius Foley born in Ireland to another Cornelius Foley but this is all I know. I've heard from Kerry or Cork. Anyone know and Cornelius's, with the Foley name?

    Daniel Foley

My name is Daniel Foley and I live in Davenport, Iowa, USA. My grandfather dictated a family history about 1930 that gave the origins of the family as County Waterford. He said that one of our ancestors (Liam or William) was jailed for theft and put into servitude in Dungarvan about 1600. This ancestor was put on a sailing ship and went to what is now the coast of Maine USA. This was a very early fishing haven for European ships. Our ancestor left the ship and lived there, then moved to Canada. The number of generations is not known. My great grandfather said that his father's father went back to Ireland and settled, again in Waterford and he had a brother who settled in Cork. I have found all of his fathers information from 1820 on. Anyone have a story like this in their family?

I'm Michael Foley from Dublin - my father was born in the townland of Gortnagree near Kells Bay and Caherciveen in Co. Kerry in 1908. His family were there at least since the mid 1700s, most likely longer. Their home is close to Mount Foley a townland that is written 'Knockaneyouloo' (an anglicised version of Cnocán Úi Fhoghlú - meaning 'little hill of the Foleys').

I am an administrator of the Foley yDNA project on the website of Family Tree DNA (FTDNA), a yDNA testing company. Our first results comparing the Foley YDNA of members shows differences according to the sounds of the name from 1659 (I also search that Petty Survey.  I'd love more Foleys to take the full BigY 700 test and join the project - we can discover a lot.?

I believe my John Foley was born in Ireland around 1797. He married in Newfoundland Canada in 1836. He had a son John, born and died in Newfoundland (1846-1900), who was a "Captain of a schooner that put out in Placentia bay". (Newfoundland, Canada)

My grandmother was Carol Foley, daughter of Alfred James Foley. His parents were Micheal C. Foley and Mary (Minnie) Foley. They came to New York from County Kerry, Ireland. Would love to meet some relatives.

William Foley, My great-great-grandfather whom we believe immigrated to the Eastern US or Canada before 1840, very purposefully had engraved on his grave in Erin, Wisconsin that he was a proud native of County Kerry. We know little about where they were from in Ireland other than that. He married Marcella McCormick sometime before their son William Henry was born in Binghamton, Broome County, New York. I've looked for records but there was a fire and the churches and the state don't have much. Any help would be very valued by me.
