DEVINE Family History
This interesting and unusual surname is generally accepted as being of Old French origin, and as such was introduced into England by the Normans after the Conquest of 1066. However it is not as simple as that at all. The name is also well recorded in Ireland, and has been since before the 15th century. Whether this is also as a result of a Norman-Welsh "importation" at the time of the invasion by Strongbow, earl of Pembroke in 1169, or whether it is an anglicisation of the Gaelic O'Daimhin, is far from clear. Possibly both may well be the answer. Certainly in England the name is one of that large group of early surnames that were gradually created from the habitual use of a nickname...Select Audience

I am trying to find records for the family of Bernard/Bartholomew Devine. His wife Sarah Welch Devine left for Boston, MA with her three youngest boys John, Martin, and Bernard in the late 1860's. (Her oldest children Patrick & Mary immigrated to Boston earlier). Patrick was a sailor for the Union Navy. I cannot find baptismal records for the Devine children-Born 1843-1859, nor can I find any record of Bartholomew emigrating with his family. Patrick was the only child that listed the townland in Galway as Clifden on his naturalization record (family tradition says they came from Barna. There is a reference to a Bartholomew living in Rahoon, not far from Barna. Any help is deeply appreciated.

I have research from my Grandmother that she was from the lineage of William Devin born in 1724 in Camden Parish, Dublin, Ireland. He married Sarah Smith after moving to Pittsylvania, Virginia in 1750. His father was also named William and married a women named Martha on Sept. 7, 1720 in Camden Parish. They had 9 children.

I am a direct descendant of a Patrick Devine born in 1814 in Maith Ireland...my great, great grandfather. He emigrated to the US date unknown, but before 1862 because he joined the Union army and fought in the Civil War in a Wisconsin regiment from 1862 to 1865 when he was given an honorable discharge, but with a disability. He married Mary Howard date unknown. How many children they had is unknown to me except for my great grandmother Mary Frances Devine who married Joseph Vincent McCosker in 1872. They were the parents of my grandfather Charles McCosker and three other children who died young. Joseph was killed in a railroad accident in 1891. Charles married Cora Sultz and they are my grandparents and the parents of my mother Frances Anne McCosker who was a nurse. She married Ray Robinson, my father, who was an artist.
I know very little about the Devines and to make matters worse, there are at least 2, possibly 3 Devine families living in the Milwaukee area about the same time. I have them all tangled up and would like any info that anyone has to help me untangle my Devine ancestors and find out more info about them. I would be most grateful.

(Part 1 of 3) The Devine name has a long history in the British Isles, but now DNA and some recorded history says its origin is from the north-west region of the Emerald Island. The Devine story [dominated by DNA tribal marker R1b-L513, Subgroup FA] can trace their beginnings to the Finn Valley in Donegal, Ireland from 50 BCE. Perhaps the journey begins with the Clanna Dedad; Deda, son of Sen or Deda Mac Sin. The Devine surname origin is possibly from the Dรกirine [R1b-L513] who found the Kingdom of Brycheiniog, Wales around 300 CE.

(Part 2 of 3) According to research, the Kingdom of Brycheiniog will take part in an invasion of Brittany, France around 500 CE. But how could this be? Recent discoveries from DNA testing are unlocking the migration patterns of Celtic tribes as late as 800 CE to 1200 CE. The Devine story begins in pre-history Ireland but this descendant will then move to Wales where the family can be traced back to their Welsh tribe Cydifor Fawr. This line and many of his kin will then travel to Brittany, France during the Dark Ages.

(Part 3 of 3) Discover their newly found untold story and how forgotten texts bring their story back to life. From the ebook, โThe Tribe Withinโ learn how DNA unfolds this amazing tale and if you look in the right places, how history narrates this evidence. There is another written account of their story, but it is camouflaged in smoke and myth โ it will become the tales of King Arthur.
