MERRIGAN Family History
There is some considerable doubt as to the origination of this surname. It seems to be native Irish and according to the famous Victorian Irish etymologist Father Wolfe, descends from the old Gaelic pre 10th century O'Muireagain, which would suggest that if he is correct, that the meaning is 'The son of the descendant of Mary'. This is probably a reference to a follower of the Virgin Mary, whose popularity reached a peak between the 12th and 15th centuries, although it has scarcely diminished in Ireland today.Select Audience

David Merrigan
Hi Carol.
If I can do, I will help you search for your origins email me, if your still searching for the family.,
I will happily try find any relevant information on your family roots.. The name appears to be originally from County Longford area, but as with all things Irish history can be a bit distorted after hundreds of years.
Carol Merrigan McLaughlin
I am looking for any information on the Merrigan family. My ancestors came from Ireland in the 1860's (I have not been able to identify which county) and settled in Boston, MA. Each generation has had an 'Edward Joseph'. Edward Joseph Merrigan was born in 1829 in Ireland; his parents are named Edward J and Mary. He married Hannah Simmons who was born in 1828; her parents are named Daniel Simmons and Elizabeth. I have been able to trace back to Ireland, but I come to a hard stop once my root tracing lands on Irish territory.
