MCGONIGAL Family HistoryRecorded in several forms including McGonigle, McGonigal, McConagle, and the dialectal variants McConville or Conwell, this is an illustrious Irish surname. It is believed to have provided more members of the clergy per head of numbers, than any other Irish clan, and yet at the sametime to have had many members who have followed a warlike tradition. Until the 20th century, the nameholders were constant in their close association with County Donegal, and until then, the name was rarely recorded elsewhere.

My Great Great Grandmother was Margarette McGonigal. Her mother was Ellen. They came to Washington County; Maryland and she met and married my GGGF Henry Anselm Kelly in 1828. That is all I know. I cannot find a connection for the McGonigal or Kelly family. I am thinking they may have come over from the Ulster Plantation, I have Scottish DNA.
My paternal grandmother was susan mcgonigal born in donegal in 1879, her parents were Francis and Mary Jane. She married henry moffitt and they emigrated to nz about 1913.
My wife was born to an Alice McGonigal in Chicago in 1973 (according to her birth certificate). A recent ancestry DNA test confirmed 50% Irish heritage from the area on this site! Looking for information on her family as she was adopted and has no idea beyond what I have just provided. Thanks for any help!

My 3rd great-grandfather? is Samuel McGonigal, born 1810 in Cross Creek, PA. I'm nearly certain his parents are William and Marha McGonigal who were born in Ireland and married there, and that his younger sister is Isabelle or Isabella who married Andrew Love Colwell. So far as I can tell, William is in Washington Co., PA in 1800, 1810, and 1830 and Martha is living there in 1850 with Isabelle. I hope to learn more about the family. I have lots of info on Samuel's descendants and love to share!
